Splitwise Limits

Hit the Splitwise daily limit?

The free tier caps how many expenses you can add in a day and puts a timer between entries. Five ways around it, including the one that costs nothing.

You added a few expenses, tried to add another, and Splitwise told you that you have reached your limit for the day. Nothing is broken and your data is fine. You have run into the free tier cap.

What the limit is

Splitwise restricts how many expenses a free account can add in a single day. Users have consistently reported a cap in the range of three to five entries, and there is also a short cooldown between entries, so even under the cap you cannot log a shopping trip in one quick burst.

The exact number is not published, and people report slightly different behaviour on different accounts, which suggests it gets tuned. What is consistent is the outcome: at some point in a busy day, you are done adding expenses until tomorrow unless you subscribe.

When it usually bites

The day you get back from a trip with a stack of receipts. The first of the month when rent, electricity, internet, gas and the maid's salary all go in together. The morning after a group dinner where four people paid for different things.

Why it exists

Splitwise added limits and ads to push free users towards Splitwise Pro. That is a normal thing for a company to do and there is no conspiracy in it. The friction is deliberate, because friction is what converts.

Whether it is worth paying to remove is a personal call. If you split a handful of expenses a month, you will rarely hit the cap and the subscription is pointless. If you live with flatmates in a city and settle up constantly, you will hit it often, and then you are choosing between an annual fee and a different app.

Five ways around it

1. Wait it out

The cap resets. Log what you can today, note the rest somewhere, add them tomorrow. Free, and mildly infuriating, and easy to forget the ones you noted down.

2. Batch them up

Instead of four separate grocery runs, add one entry for the week with a total. It saves you entries against the cap, and it costs you the detail. If anyone ever disputes a number you have nothing to point at.

3. Ask a flatmate

The cap is per account, so a flatmate who has not hit theirs can add it. This works and it is also how you slowly annoy your flatmates.

4. Pay for Pro

Removes the cap and the ads. If you genuinely like the app, this is the clean answer. Priced at a few dollars a month or a discounted annual rate.

5. Switch apps

Several splitting apps have no daily limit, including ours. Splitify has no cap on expenses per day, no cooldown timer, and no ads. It also reads Splitwise's own group exports, so switching does not mean losing two years of rent, bills and grocery history.

Competitor rows reflect what each app advertised on its Google Play listing in August 2026, so a No means the app does not list that feature. Free tiers change often in this category, so check an app's current terms before you move a group onto it.

How to decide

Count how many expenses you added last month. If it is under about twenty, the cap will barely touch you and you should stay put. If it is fifty or more, you are hitting the wall most weeks, and you are either paying or moving.

If you move, move the whole group at once. A splitting app with half your flatmates on it is worse than either app with all of them. Import the group, add the next real expense there, and share the invite link in the group chat so everyone lands on something that already looks right. There is a step by step version in how to import your Splitwise data.

No cap, no cooldown, no ads

Add thirty expenses in an evening if you need to. Splitting on Splitify is free.

Common questions

How many expenses can you add per day on Splitwise for free?

Splitwise does not publish the number, but free users consistently report a cap of roughly three to five expenses per day, with a short cooldown between entries. Once you hit it, you are asked to wait until the next day or upgrade to Pro.

When does the Splitwise daily limit reset?

It resets on a daily cycle, so entries you could not add become possible again the next day. There is no way to reset it early on a free account.

Is there a free app with no daily expense limit?

Yes. Splitify has no daily cap, no cooldown between entries and no ads, and splitting is free permanently. Tricount, Splid, Settle Up and Splitkaro also have no daily cap, though Tricount and Settle Up run ads.

Will I lose my history if I switch away from Splitwise?

Not if the app you move to can import. Splitwise exports any group as a spreadsheet, and Splitify reads that file directly, so your members, expense history and balances come across without retyping and without settling up first.

Does Splitwise Pro remove ads as well as the limit?

Yes, Pro removes both the daily cap and the ads, and unlocks features like receipt scanning, item-wise splits and currency conversion.
